In the mountainous communities of Tanay, Rizal, reliable electricity can remain difficult to access despite being only a few hours from Metro Manila. Barangay Mamuyao is a rural community in the Sierra Madre and home to Dumagat-Remontado families; government programs have previously distributed solar lighting there, while Mamuyao Elementary School has relied on solar projects because of its distance from conventional electrical infrastructure.
WeGeneration Initiative Inc. (WGI) is a Philippine nonprofit advancing climate action through renewable energy, environmental education, and community leadership. Guided by its vision, "A community caring for our common home," WGI believes lasting change begins when people have the knowledge, opportunities, and confidence to become part of the solution, and its mission is to bridge communities to access and implement sustainable energy solutions.
In Tanay, that means pairing solar infrastructure for essential community facilities with hands-on technical training and youth climate education—so communities gain not only more reliable electricity, but greater capacity to manage their own energy systems.

HF Partnership
Through this partnership with the Honnold Foundation, WeGeneration Initiative will expand access to reliable, clean energy in Barangay Mamuyao, Tanay, Rizal, and nearby communities, where access to electricity remains limited, unreliable, or unavailable. The partnership will support community-based solar energy systems for essential spaces such as classrooms, health facilities, and community centers, improving learning environments, strengthening health and basic services, and increasing community resilience during emergencies and disasters. Beyond infrastructure, the goal is to build local capacity and ownership: community members will participate in hands-on solar training covering installation, operation, maintenance, and safety, gaining practical skills with technical guidance from WeGen Energy Philippines and its expert partners.
The project will also engage more than 600 students and youth, instilling values that enable them to become part of WeGeneration's Green Guardians caring for their common home, while encouraging more environmental advocates to join the effort. Barangay Mamuyao will serve as a model for demonstrating how renewable energy systems can go beyond providing electricity to become tools for empowerment, resilience, and opportunity, combining solar infrastructure, technical expertise, and community participation to create pathways toward green livelihoods and self-sustained energy solutions.
