About

SolarAid distributes affordable solar lamps to families in Africa’s most remote off-grid regions, where many households rely on homemade kerosene lanterns. Kerosene emits environmentally harmful toxic black smoke and requires costly fuel that can consume up to 25% of a family's income.

SolarAid’s social enterprise project, SunnyMoney, trains community members to sell solar lights through school and business networks. SunnyMoney’s network, primarily focused in Malawi, Uganda and Zambia, reaches over 10 million people. This unique model creates continued reinvestment in communities while addressing public health, environmental, and socioeconomic inequalities.

Solar lamps have simplified our life. We are able to save money as compared to when we were using [kerosene] to sustain studies for our children.

HF Partnership

The Honnold Foundation partnered with Solaraid from 2013 through December 2020.

During that time, we funded Solaraid’s community solar advocate programs and supported their ultimate goal: eradicating kerosene lanterns from Africa.
