About

In 2015, the North End Woodward Community Coalition (NEWCC) purchased 15 homes at risk of foreclosure and established Detroit’s first community land trust— keeping residents in their homes, and ensuring affordability across multiple generations. “The families wanted to stay in their homes but just couldn’t pay. We couldn’t stand by and watch them be forced out of their homes. We knew we had to do something,” said Reverend Ross.

NEWCC continues to manage the land trust, and also provides residents of the North End and Woodward neighborhoods with a food bank, equitable internet, youth job training, and a low power FM radio station.

The sun doesn’t just shine on the rich and famous. The sun shines on all of us.

HF Partnership

The Honnold Foundation has partnered with NEWCC, and with solar panel manufacturer REC Group, to install best-in-class solar arrays on 10 land trust homes. The installations cut residents’ energy bills in half, offset 41.5 metric tons of CO2 a year, and ultimately increase investment and resiliency in marginalized neighborhoods.
