About

Liberia has one of the lowest rates of electricity access in the world. In the capital city of Monrovia, just 16.8% of residents have access to electricity in their homes— largely from gasoline or diesel generators. Consequently, Liberian students have little to no access to computers, or opportunities to learn modern computational skills.

The More Than Me Academy, operated by Hilltop Schools, is the only all-girls, tuition-free school in Monrovia. Hilltop Schools provides high-quality, holistic education, two meals per day, medical care, extracurricular activities, psychosocial support, and Sexual & Reproductive Health education. After 9th grade, Hilltop Schools provides crucial financial aid to alumni, ensuring that girls can further their education at other high schools and universities.

Solar power will provide sustainable energy for digital learning for students, teachers and parents at our school. Now we can model safer learning and respect for our planet.

With the Honnold Foundation’s support, Hilltop Schools is installing a rooftop solar array to power its all-girls academy. Once completed, hands-on training and additional lessons on renewable energy will be added to Hilltop’s curriculum.

Currently, the Academy is powered by a low-capacity diesel generator that barely produces enough power to reliably provide electricity across the campus. Compounding the issue, the generator doesn’t produce enough power to support the Academy’s planned Digital Learning Lab. When complete, the 15 kW solar array will power the entire campus, including 10 classrooms, an administrative office, a health room, the students’ Safe Space, and a Digital Learning Center.
